LOCAL. FRESH. SPECIALTY.
Your downtown Traverse City, full service, specialty food market and wine cellar
Since 1987
Burritt’s Fresh Market was originally opened as Burritt’s Meat Market in spring of 1987 by twin brothers Kurt and Ken Burritt. They operated in the same building where we are located today, occupying far less space. Burritt’s was surrounded by other food markets such as Potter’s Bakery (relocated) and Carlson’s Fish Market (sold to Burritt’s in 2002). When Kurt Burritt decided it was time to leave Burritt’s with his wife and children to travel and homeschool, Ken and Teri took the opportunity to evaluate the community’s needs and move the market in an expanded gourmet direction. Thanks to their dedication and passion for people and great food, the business grew every year, adding new departments, expanding existing ones, and providing more and more jobs for outstanding members of our community. In 2013, Ken hired Jake Kaberle as General Manager. Jake has reinforced the values set in place by the Burritts and provided creative energy that lends to continued success and exciting potential for even more growth. In 2021 Jake and his family completed the purchase of the market and they continue the standard of excellence set forth by the founders.
Burritt’s has long been a supporter of local charities, giving our time and financial resources to help those in need. The market has also been a gracious recipient of several awards including Traverse City’s Red Hot Best, yearly nominations for Hagerty’s Small Business of the Year, and recognition from the 4-H Club for being a supporter for over 30 years. The growth of Traverse City and the surrounding area has been beneficial to our business as we maintain a solid connection with our neighborhood as well as reaching foodies far and wide.
Thanksgiving 2025
For nearly 40 years, Burritt’s Fresh Markets has been a trusted, local shop where families buy essential quality ingredients for their holiday meals. Whether your celebrations include a roast, a fresh turkey, or the freshest seafood, Burritt’s staff takes pride in knowing the farmers, the processors, and the fisheries where our products come from. That’s why we’re pleased to continue our fourth year offering fresh, all-natural, turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas from Otto’s Turkey Farm.
Otto’s Turkey Farm has been home to six generations providing high-quality turkey meat that’s been raised naturally. Feed is mixed and milled at the farm and fed to their turkeys housed in open air, free roaming, barns. They process and pack onsite in their updated plant. This results in a fresh meat that is antibiotic and hormone free, vacuum sealed in clear packaging so you can clearly see the quality of the turkey!
Whole turkeys are $4.89 per pound this 2025 holiday season, the first price increase in two years. Bone-in and boneless turkey breast is also available.

DEPARTMENTS
Get ready for a tantalizing experience with our weekly specials that will leave you craving for more. Discover a variety of savory delights that will satisfy the most discerning palate.
Meat
Proudly serving premium Black Angus beef from Agribeef companies, Snake River Farms, and the St. Helen’s meat company, our proteins are hormone free, steroid free, and antibiotic free beef and pork from the Pacific Northwest.
Why is our beef different? Our meat supplier is vertically integrated.
What does that mean?
All of our beef comes from the same genealogy, free range on the same ranch. All of the employees from the ranchers, to the veterinarians, to the meat cutters all work for the same company with the same high standards.
How does that make the beef better?
This all adds up to consistency. Every burger, every steak, and every roast come from the same ranchers breeding the same cattle, free ranging on the same grasses, finishing on the same grains and handled with the same care as prescribed by Temple Grandin.
Seafood
Unparalleled freshness in Northern Michigan. Our seafood department boasts multiple fresh fish deliveries every day. With our network of fish suppliers we can source any of your preferred seafood.
Seasonally featuring: Halibut, Wild King Salmon, Ora King Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Great Lakes Whitefish, Walleye and Perch, Rockfish, Red Fish, Grouper, Rainbow Trout, Monkfish, Skate Wing, Arctic Char and so much more! Please call to place an order to assure inventory.
Wine
Burritt’s Fresh Markets opened in 1987 by twin brothers Ken and Kurt Burritt along with their wives Teri and Emily. With its beginnings as a butcher shop, the Burritts wisly listened to their customers and expanded into produce, grocery, gourmet and specialty products. When customers started asking for wine the Burritts’ had a plan. Being California natives they decided to introduce California wines to Traverse City and it was just what Traverse City was looking for. Burritt’s Fresh Markets became the go-to wine shop for anything California. To this day Burritts is considered a legacy account to some of the most prestigious wines from all over California. The wine department is so successful that Burritt’s Fresh Markets is now known for stocking wines from all over the world. The Rarest wines of Europe and any other wine growing region are either on Burritt’s shelf or available by special order. Burritts also has gems that are unbelievable values. Burritt’s focuses on small family owned businesses, be it wine growers/makers or importers and distributors. In 2012 Burritts expanded the wine department. It was a great move as it allowed us to expand our wine, beer and non-alcoholic options and gave customers more space to find the perfect bottle of wine. We were also able to open the wine bar and the results speak for themselves. Customers can come and enjoy a glass of wine at the wine bar while eating olives, cheeses, crackers, salami, dips to pair with what’s in their glass.
